CCDB to mark golden jubilee with month-long programmes

The Christian Commission for Development Bangladesh (CCDB) has taken month-long programmes to mark its golden jubilee (50 years) anniversary.

Earlier today, the grand ceremony of its golden jubilee was held at CCDB-HOPE Foundation in Baroipara area of Dhaka’s Savar.

Dr John Sircar, principal of Bangladesh Theological Seminary and College in Chattogram, David A Halder, chairman of CCDB Commission, and Juliate Keya Malakar, executive director of CCDB, inaugurated the event.

“This 50-year journey, a milestone in the life of CCDB, will be celebrated centrally and with significance in various project areas of CCDB, as a compelling opportunity to remember the past, focus on the present and plan for the future,” said David A Halder.

For 50 years, CCDB has been a beacon of hope, compassion, and progress in the community that they are serving, having impacted the lives of countless individuals through the relentless efforts of its members and partners.

সিসিডিবির সুবর্ণজয়ন্তী – মানুষের পাশে থাকার ৫০ বছর

সদ্য মুক্তিযুদ্ধ শেষ হওয়া একটি দেশ। ত্রাণ ও পুনর্বাসনের প্রয়োজন। তখন এগিয়ে আসে জেনেভাভিত্তিক খ্রিস্টীয় ধর্মীয় সংগঠন ওয়ার্ল্ড কাউন্সিল অব চার্চেস। ত্রাণ ও পুনর্বাসনের লক্ষ্যে তারা প্রতিষ্ঠা করে বেসরকারি উন্নয়ন সংস্থা খ্রিস্টিয়ান কমিশন ফর ডেভেলপমেন্ট ইন বাংলাদেশ (সিসিডিবি)। ১৯৭৩ সালে প্রতিষ্ঠিত সংস্থাটি ৫০ বছরে পা রাখল। 

সুবর্ণজয়ন্তী উপলক্ষে শনিবার (২১ অক্টোবর) সাভারের বারইপাড়ায় সিসিডিবি হোপ সেন্টারে আয়োজন করা হয় এক আনন্দঘন অনুষ্ঠানের।

এতে প্রধান অতিথি ছিলেন বাংলাদেশ থিওলজিক্যাল সেমিনার অ্যান্ড কলেজের প্রতিষ্ঠাতা ও সভাপতি ড. জন সরকার। বিশেষ অতিথি ছিলেন সিসিডিবি কমিশনের চেয়ারম্যান ডেভিড এ হালদার এবং সিসিডিবির নির্বাহী পরিচালক জুলিয়েট কেয়া মালাকার। এছাড়াও উপস্থিত ছিলেন বিভিন্ন উন্নয়ন সহযোগী প্রতিষ্ঠান ও সংগঠনের নেতারা।

বাংলাদেশ ইকুমেনিক্যাল রিলিফ অ্যান্ড রিহ্যাবিলিটেশন সার্ভিসেস নামে যাত্রা শুরু করলেও সংগঠনটি পরে নাম ধারণ করে খ্রিস্টিয়ান কমিশন ফর ডেভেলপমেন্ট ইন বাংলাদেশ; যা সিসিডিবি নামে অধিক পরিচিত। ওয়ার্ল্ড কাউন্সিল অব চার্চেস পরিচালিত হলেও ধর্মপ্রচার থেকে সম্পূর্ণ ভিন্ন কাজে নিয়োজিত রয়েছে সংস্থাটি। জাতি, ধর্ম, বর্ণ নির্বিশেষে সবার জীবন মানোন্নয়নে প্রতিষ্ঠার পর থেকে নিরলসভাবে কাজ করে যাচ্ছে সিসিডিবি।

সিসিডিবির উন্নয়নমূলক কার্যক্রমের মধ্যে আছে সাক্ষরতা ও কর্মোপযোগী শিক্ষাদান, জীবিকা নির্বাহের উপযোগী দক্ষতার প্রশিক্ষণ, স্বাস্থ্যসেবা, খাদ্যনিরাপত্তা ও পুষ্টি, উপার্জনমূলক কর্মকাণ্ডে বৈষয়িক সহায়তা দান, সংখ্যালঘু জাতিসত্তার কার্যক্ষমতা বৃদ্ধি, লিঙ্গবৈষম্য দূরীকরণ, পরিবেশ সংরক্ষণের জন্য প্রচার এবং দুর্যোগ মোকাবিলার জন্য প্রস্তুতি ও দুর্যোগগ্রস্তদের সহায়তা প্রদান।

সিসিডিবির সুবর্ণজয়ন্তী উদযাপন অনুষ্ঠান শুরু হয় জাতীয় পতাকা উত্তোলন ও মোমবাতি প্রজ্বালনের মাধ্যমে। পরে পবিত্র কুরআন, গীতা, ত্রিপিটক ও বাইবেল থেকে পাঠ করা হয়। অতিথিদের আসন গ্রহণের পর পরিবেশিত হয় ৫০ বছরের অগ্রযাত্রায় নির্মিত বিশেষ প্রামাণ্যচিত্র ও গান।

স্বাগত বক্তব্যে সিসিডিবির নির্বাহী পরিচালক জুলিয়েট কেয়া মালাকার বলেন, ‘১৯৭৩ সালের মার্চ মাসে সিসিডিবির যাত্রা। জাতি, ধর্ম, বর্ণ নির্বিশেষে সবার উন্নয়নে আমাদের প্রতিষ্ঠার ৫০ বছর পেরিয়ে গেল। এই দীর্ঘ সময়ে সুবিধাবঞ্চিত প্রান্তিক জনগোষ্ঠীর জীবনযাত্রার মানোন্নয়নে দেশজুড়ে কাজ করে যাচ্ছি। আমাদের মহান স্বাধীনতাযুদ্ধ-পরবর্তী সময়ে যুদ্ধবিধ্বস্ত মানুষের পুনর্বাসনের লক্ষ্য নিয়ে যে প্রতিষ্ঠানটি যাত্রা শুরু করেছিল, সেই প্রতিষ্ঠানটি ধীরে ধীরে পাঁচ দশক অতিক্রম করল। এ সময়ে আমরা দেশের অসংখ্য মানুষ ও কমিউনিটির উন্নয়নে কাজ করেছি। সবার সহযোগিতায় ভবিষ্যতেও আমাদের এই উন্নয়ন কার্যক্রম অব্যাহত থাকবে। ’

সিসিডিবি কমিশনের চেয়ারম্যান ডেভিড এ হালদার বলেন, ‘মানুষের জন্য গড়ে ওঠা প্রতিষ্ঠানটি ৫০ বছরে পা রাখল। ৫০ বছর দীর্ঘ সময়। এতগুলো বছর ধরে নিরলসভাবে কাজ করে যাওয়া সহজ নয়। স্বাধীনতা-পরর্বতী সময়ে যেমন হাজার হাজার মানুষের পাশে দাঁড়িয়েছিল সিসিডিবি, তেমনি এখনও মানুষের পাশেই আছি আমরা। সিসিডিবি তার কাজের মাধ্যমে এমন আরও অনেক বছর টিকে থাকবে।’

প্রধান অতিথির বক্তব্যে বাংলাদেশ থিওলজিক্যাল সেমিনারি অ্যান্ড কলেজের প্রতিষ্ঠাতা ও সভাপতি ড. জন সরকার বলেন, ‘মানুষের জন্য কাজ করতে হবে। ধর্মগ্রন্থেও বলা আছে সে কথা। সিসিডিবি বিগত ৫০ বছর ধরে কাজ করছে মানুষের জন্য। তাদের ধন্যবাদ জানাই। প্রতিষ্ঠানটি কাজের মাধ্যমে আরও অনেকদূর এগিয়ে যাবে, আরও অজস্র মানুষের পাশে দাঁড়াবে, এই কামনা করি।’

সিসিডিবি বর্তমানে দেশের ২৩টি জেলায় বিভিন্ন ধরনের উন্নয়ন কার্যক্রম পরিচালনা করছে; যার উপকারভোগী প্রায় দেড় লাখ পরিবার। জেলাগুলোর মধ্যে রয়েছে মানিকগঞ্জ, রাজশাহী, নরসিংদী, নবাবগঞ্জ, নাটোর, নওগাঁ, পাবনা, গোপালগঞ্জ, বরিশাল, খুলনা, দিনাজপুর, রংপুর, বান্দরবান, রাঙামাটি, ফরিদপুর, যশোর, মাগুরা, ঝিনাইদহ, সাতক্ষীরা, কুষ্টিয়া, নড়াইল এবং কক্সবাজার।

সিসিডিবির উন্নয়ন কার্যক্রমে প্রাধান্য পাচ্ছে সংখ্যালঘু জাতিসত্তার ক্ষমতায়ন, স্থিতিশীল ও অংশীদারত্বভিত্তিক উন্নয়ন কর্মকাণ্ডে নারীদের কার্যকর অংশগ্রহণ নিশ্চিত করার জন্য তাদের ছোট ছোট উদ্যোগকে সমর্থন দান, সব পর্যায়ে লিঙ্গবৈষম্য দূরীকরণ, সাংগঠনিক দক্ষতার জন্য সুযোগ সৃষ্টি এবং দুর্যোগগ্রস্তদের সহায়তা প্রদান। সিসিডিবির পথচলার ৫০ বছরকে স্মরণীয় করে রাখতে দেশজুড়ে মাসব্যাপী বিভিন্ন অনুষ্ঠান ও কার্যক্রম হাতে নিয়েছে।  অনুষ্ঠানটি সেই কার্যক্রমের উদ্বোধন। আগামী এক মাসে সিসিডিবির ১১টি কর্ম এলাকায় ৫০ বছর পূর্তি অনুষ্ঠানের আয়োজন করা হবে। এ ছাড়াও ২০২৪ সালের মার্চ মাসে আড়ম্বরপূর্ণ অনুষ্ঠানের মাধ্যমে সিসিডিবির সুবর্ণজয়ন্তী পালন হবে বলে জানানো হয়েছে।

যুদ্ধবিদ্ধস্ত দেশ পুনর্গঠনে প্রতিষ্ঠিত সিসিডিবির ৫০ বছর পূর্তি

পাঁচ দশক আগে যুদ্ধ বিধ্বস্ত বাংলাদেশ পুনর্গঠনে যাত্রা শুরু করা খ্রীষ্টিয়ান কমিশন ফর ডেভলপমেন্ট ইন বাংলাদেশের (সিসিডিবি) ৫০ বছর পূর্তি হয়েছে। এ উপলক্ষে সুবর্ণ জয়ন্তী উদযাপনে শনিবার (২১ অক্টোবর) মাসব্যাপী কর্মসূচীর উদ্বোধন করেছে সংস্থাটি।

বেলা ১১টায় সাভারের আশুলিয়ার বারইপাড়ায় সিসিডিবি হোপ ফাউন্ডেশনে জমকালো উদ্বোধনী অনুষ্ঠান আয়োজন করা হয়।

উদ্বোধনী অনুষ্ঠানে বক্তারা বলেন, সিসিডিবি এই ৫০ বছরে মানুষের কাছে সহমর্মিতা ও আশার এক আলোকবর্তিকা হিসেবে প্রতীয়মান হয়েছে। পাঁচ দশকে সংগঠনটি তার সদস্য ও অংশীদারদের নিরলস প্রচেষ্টার মাধ্যমে মানুষের জীবনে প্রভাব ফেলতে সক্ষম হয়েছে। ৫০ বছর উদযাপনের মাধ্যমে সিসিডিবি, তার সেবা ও পথচলার স্মৃতিচারণ করছে।

সিসিডিবির ৫০ বছরের জমকালো এই অনুষ্ঠানের উদ্বোধন করেন চট্টগ্রামের বাংলাদেশ থিওলজিক্যাল সেমিনারি এন্ড কলেজের প্রতিষ্ঠাতা ও সভাপতি ড. জন সরকার, সিসিডিবি কমিশনের চেয়ারম্যান ডেভিড এ. হালদার ও সিসিডিবির নির্বাহী পরিচালক জুলিয়েট কেয়া মালাকার। অনুষ্ঠানের শুরুতে সিসিডিবির নির্বাহী পরিচালক জুলিয়েট কেয়া মালাকার সিসিডিবির ৫০ বছর উদযাপনে সবাইকে স্বাগত জানান।

সিসিডিবি কমিশনের চেয়ারম্যান ডেভিড এ. হালদার বলেন, ‘৫০ বছরের এই পথচলা সিসিডিবির জন্য মাইলফলক। সিসিডিবির জন্য এই উদযাপন, অতীতকে স্মরণ করা, বর্তমানের ওপর দৃষ্টিনিবদ্ধ করা এবং ভবিষ্যতের পরিকল্পনা করার কার্যকরী সুযোগ। এই প্রতিষ্ঠাবার্ষিকী কেন্দ্রীয়ভাবে এবং বিভিন্ন প্রকল্প এলাকায় তাৎপর্যের সঙ্গে উদযাপিত হতে যাচ্ছে।’

CCDB’s 50th anniversary kicks off month-long celebration

  • Started journey to rebuild war-torn country

  • Golden jubilee celebration inaugurated

The Christian Commission for Development in Bangladesh (CCDB), which started its journey to rebuild war-torn Bangladesh five decades ago, has completed 50 years. On this occasion, the organization has inaugurated a month-long program on Saturday to celebrate the golden jubilee.

A grand opening ceremony was held at CCDB HOPE Foundation at Baroipara of Ashulia in Savar at 11am.

Speakers at the inaugural ceremony said CCDB has been a beacon of compassion and hope for the people in these 50 years. Over the past five decades, the organization has been able to make an impact on people’s lives through the tireless efforts of its members and partners. By celebrating 50 years, CCDB is recalling its service and journey.

“We are also grateful to all those involved in this journey, through whom they have been able to reach this milestone and which is inspiring the new generation to carry forward this torch of development. To commemorate the 50th anniversary of its journey, CCDB has planned a series of events throughout the month,” the speakers added.

At the beginning of the event, CCDB Executive Director Juliate Keya Malakar welcomed everyone to the celebration of 50 years of CCDB.

Juliate Malakar said: “CCDB started its journey five decades ago with the aim of rehabilitating the war-torn people of Bangladesh in the light of the dream seen by a group of visionaries. In these 50 years, we have been able to involve countless people and communities in our development journey. We are currently working to address poverty alleviation, inequality and environmental issues of the poorest of the poor. ”

CCDB Commission Chairman David A Halder said: “This 50-year journey is a milestone for CCDB. For CCDB, this celebration is a productive opportunity to remember the past, focus on the present and plan for the future. This anniversary is going to be celebrated centrally and with significance in various project areas.”

সিসিডিবির নির্বাহী পরিচালক বলেন, পাঁচ দশক আগে একদল স্বপ্নদ্রষ্টার দেখা স্বপ্নের আলোকে, বাংলাদেশের যুদ্ধবিধ্বস্ত মানুষের পুনর্বাসনের লক্ষ্যে সিসিডিবির যাত্রা শুরু হয়

পাঁচ দশক আগে যুদ্ধবিধ্বস্ত বাংলাদেশ পুনর্গঠনে যাত্রা শুরু করেছিল খ্রিস্টিয়ান কমিশন ফর ডেভলপমেন্ট ইন বাংলাদেশ (সিসিডিবি)।

সংস্থাটির সুবর্ণজয়ন্তী উদযাপনে মাসব্যাপী কর্মসূচি গ্রহণ করা হয়েছে। শনিবার (২১ অক্টোবর) সাভারের আশুলিয়ার বাড়ইপাড়ায় সিসিডিবি হোপ ফাউন্ডেশনে এই কর্মসূচির উদ্বোধনী অনুষ্ঠান করা হয়।

এছাড়া তার এই পথচলার সঙ্গে জড়িত সকলে প্রতি কৃতজ্ঞাতা প্রকাশ করছে, যাদের মাধ্যমে তারা এই মাইলফলকে পৌঁছাতে পেরেছে এবং যা নতুন প্রজন্মকে উন্নয়নের এই মশাল সামনে এগিয়ে নেওয়ার অনুপ্রেরণা দিচ্ছে। সিসিডিবি তার পথচলার ৫০ বছরকে স্মরণীয় করে রাখতে, মাসব্যাপী বিভিন্ন অনুষ্ঠান কার্যক্রমের পরিকল্পনা করেছে।

অনুষ্ঠানে সিসিডিবির নির্বাহী পরিচালক জুলিয়েট কেয়া মালাকার বলেন, “পাঁচ দশক আগে একদল স্বপ্নদ্রষ্টার দেখা স্বপ্নের আলোকে, বাংলাদেশের যুদ্ধবিধ্বস্ত মানুষের পুনর্বাসনের লক্ষ্যে সিসিডিবির যাত্রা শুরু হয়। এই ৫০ বছরে আমরা অসংখ্য মানুষকে ও কমিউনিটিকে এই উন্নয়নযাত্রায় সম্পৃক্ত করতে পেরেছি। আমরা বর্তমানে হতদরিদ্র জনগোষ্ঠীর দরিদ্র বিমোচন, অসমতা এবং পরিবেশগত নানাবিধ সমস্যা মোকাবিলায় কাজ করে চলেছি।”

সিসিডিবি কমিশনের চেয়ারম্যান ডেভিড এ. হালদার বলেন, “৫০ বছরের এই পথচলা সিসিডিবির জন্য মাইলফলক। সিসিডিবির জন্য এই উদযাপন, অতীতকে স্মরণ করা, বর্তমানের ওপর দৃষ্টিনিবদ্ধ করা এবং ভবিষ্যতের পরিকল্পনা করার একটি কার্যকরী সুযোগ।”

CCA Executive Committee attends seminar on ecological and sustainable development issues in South Asia

The Executive Committee of the Christian Conference of Asia (CCA) participated in a day-long seminar on ‘Ecological and Sustainable Development Issues in South Asia’ which was organised by the Climate Centre of the Christian Commission for Development in Bangladesh (CCDB) on 6 March 2023. The seminar formed part of the reflections undertaken by the CCA Executive Committee on the theme of the forthcoming 15th CCA General Assembly, ‘God, Renew Us in Your Spirit and Restore the Creation’.

The seminar analysed ecological and environmental crises constantly affecting South Asian countries, such as cyclones, droughts, lightning, landslides, glacier melting, sea-level rise, salinity intrusion, land degradation, acute water scarcity, biodiversity loss and deforestation, desertification, degradation of river and marine resources.

According to the Global Climate Index, six out of ten climate risk-affected countries in the world are in Asia: Bangladesh, Pakistan, Myanmar, Thailand, Nepal, and the Philippines.

Md. Foezullah Talukder, Director of the Climate Change Programme at the CCDB Climate Centre, illustrated the most dangerous climatic events in South Asia.

Inauguration of the Akonful Forum Center, fulfilling a long-standing hope of forum members of the Amdala village of Manikganj District.

The Akonful Mohila Forum Shomoby Somity Limited opened its forum Center on March 8, 2023, in Amdala village of Shibaloy Upazila in Manikganj district. The Executive Director of CCDB, Juliet Kaya Malakar, and the Head of the Comprehensive Poverty Reduction Program (CPRP), George Ashit Singh, attended the event. The Chief Executive cut the ribbon and inaugurated the forum house, fulfilling a long-standing hope of the forum members. This opening ceremony marked a significant step forward for the Akonful Mohila Forum and its mission of economic and social development for the area’s poor people.

The Akonful Forum’s journey began with small groups supporting each other. Over time, the groups grew and merged to form an association. With support from programs like PPRDP and CPRP, the forum was registered as an independent people’s organization in 2008. Since then, it has continued to work towards the economic and social development of the poor people in the area.

The forum received training from CCDB, including awareness yard meetings, proper forum management, income-enhancing training, and climate change and disaster response training. With this training, the forum could effectively manage its operations, increase its income, and respond to the challenges of climate change and disasters.

CCDB provided total loan assistance of Tk. 4 lac 50 thousand to the forum, which was later repaid as the forum became self-sufficient. As of January 2023, the total capital of the Akonful Mohila Forum was one crore 56 lac 86 thousand 3 hundred and 51taka. A significant portion of this capital has been distributed among the forum members, and the recovered debt is also substantial.

The forum has also established its development fund. It conducts various developmental activities every year, including nutrition programs for children, livestock vaccination programs, distribution of fruit trees, and educational assistance for students.

The Akonful Forum has been instrumental in helping its members become successful entrepreneurs. Many women, like Nirjala and Mankhushi, have changed their fortunes through vermicompost production, becoming financially independent and role models for other women in the area.

The Akonful Mohila Forum’s story is a testament to the power of community and cooperation. Through their hard work, dedication, and support from programs like Comprehensive Poverty Reduction Program (CPRP), the forum has transformed the lives of its members and the community they serve. We hope this story inspires you to support and uplift your communities.

CCDB’s COVID-19 Emergency Response

Meet the partners of the new ENGAGE! program

ENGAGE project will work to advance gender equality and poverty reduction by enhancing women’s capacity to participate in the social and economic life of their communities. ENGAGE! will apply an asset-based, citizen-led development (ABCD) approach to promote gender-equitable change. This approach ensures that local communities, and in particular women, exercise ownership and control over social and economic development initiatives that respond to their realities and priorities.

ENGAGE! is a five-year initiative co-designed by Coady Institute and five partner organizations:

Christian Commission for Development (CCDB) in Bangladesh;
Self Employed Women’s Association (SEWA) in India;
Organization for Women in Self Employment (WISE) in Ethiopia;
Gender Training Institute (GTI) of the Tanzania Gender Networking Programme (TGNP);
